HIV/AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAM

The HIV/AIDS program is funded by the Department of Health and Family Services.
The program provides HIV/AIDS preventive education, mentoring, teen education, elder education, technical assistance and educational materials to member tribes. Mini-grants are provided for preventive educational purposes. Capacity building assistance is also provided.

Genes, Not Race, Should Guide Antiretroviral Treatment
A person’s genetic sequence, and not his or her race, should guide scientists and health care providers in the design of clinical trials and treatment decisions with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs such as efavirenz (found in Sustiva and Atripla), according to a review article published in the September 1 issue of AIDS.

HIV Testing in Healthcare Settings
CDC's recommendations urge providers to include HIV testing as a routine part of their patients’ healthcare. Routine HIV testing ensures more people learn whether they are infected with HIV, allowing them to benefit from earlier access to treatment, and reduce the risk of infecting their partners.
