Working Together to Strengthen Tick Awareness, Surveillance, and Prevention in Wisconsin Tribal Communities

May 12 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Ticks are small insects found in wooded areas, tall grass, and places where wildlife like deer and mice live. Some ticks can carry germs that cause illnesses in people and animals, often called tick-borne diseases. In Wisconsin, these diseases are becoming more common as the environment changes, including warmer temperatures and shifts in wildlife habitats. Tribal communities have long-standing knowledge of the land and play an important role in understanding these changes and protecting community health. This presentation will share how partners including Tribal Nations, the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC), UW–Madison, and Marshfield Clinic Research Institute are working together to better understand where ticks are found, how they spread disease, and what can be done to prevent bites. We will talk about listening to community experiences, creating educational materials that reflect Tribal values, and supporting local efforts to track ticks in the environment. By bringing together community knowledge and public health information, this work aims to support practical, respectful solutions that help Tribal communities stay safe and prepared.
