This presentation explores the complex and evolving relationships between people and freshwater systems in the Great Lakes region. Drawing on semi-formal interviews and ongoing research in Wisconsin, the presenters examine how human communities have historically interacted with and influenced lakes, as well as how these waters continue to shape societal well-being today. Participants will be encouraged to consider perspectives beyond traditional Western frameworks and view lakes as integral components of community and environmental health. The presentation will provide an overview of current findings and discuss how this work may inform future research, education, and policy initiatives.
